Fall Himalayan Intercultural Immersion Program in Ladakh, India

Just a few spaces are available for the VIS Himalayan Intercultural Immersion Program for post-high school students this fall! This 3-month program of cultural immersion takes place in Ladakh, a former Buddhist Kingdom often referred to as “the last Shangri-la” and “Little Tibet”. 10-12 adventurous students will explore, with Ladakhi peers in this remote mountain culture, some of the major challenges in the world today: environmental ethics, globalization, sustainable energy use and agricultural practices, and ways in which landscape can shape character and politics. Programs for gap students, and those taking time away from college, include trekking to remote and magical Himalayan villages during harvest time, and homestays, including camping with nomadic families near the border with Tibet. Students also have opportunities for internships in an area of interest, such as: a stay in a Buddhist monastery to explore conservation of ancient Buddhist paintings; research into local uses of passive solar architecture, and artificial glaciers; an internship with a practitioner of traditional Tibetan medicine; and an apprenticeship at a well-known Meditation Center to explore physiological and psychological affects of meditation.
